Art Initiatives
To share with your students
This resource is regularly updated to include initiatives across the UK that your students may like to pursue. You could share these opportunities with a few students or lead your whole class in taking part.
Taking part in initiatives outside of the classroom can be a good way to shake things up, or to connect with other schools and organisations.
Articulation
Articulation is a national programme, run by the National Gallery, that invites 16-19 year olds to deliver a 10-minute presentation to an audience about a work of art, architecture or artefact. The process begins with schools holding internal heats to select a student to represent their school at regional finals which take place in museums and galleries across the UK. First, second and first prize are awarded at a Grand Final, and participants are welcome to join an alumni group, which is provided with regular professional development opportunities and social activities.

Discover Articulation Challenge (KS4)
The competition is for Key Stage 4 students and is closely linked to the (above) National Gallery’s Articulation Prize. Students submit a 2-3 minute film of themselves speaking about a piece of art, architecture or artefact of their choice. They can enter in pairs or as an individual. Judges from the University of Leeds and the National Gallery then view each film, looking at content, structure, delivery and the speaker’s original approach and unique potential. They then will choose up to eight entries to take part in our summer final on campus at the University of Leeds.
Write on Art
Write on Art is a national programme, run by the Paul Mellon Centre and Art UK, that invites 14-19 year olds to share their personal, creative and critical responses to art in writing. Applicants are asked to write a piece of creative writing, review or essay about a piece of art from Art UK’s website. Twelve writers are selected to attend a Young Art Writers Workshop.

SPoKE
SPoKE is a national documentary film competition designed to challenge students to link the visual and the verbal in an imaginative manner, underpinned by solid academic research. The competition invites 14-18 year olds to create a short film about any one artwork. First, second, third and fourth prizes are awarded at a film screening ceremony for the competitions three different age categories (Up to 14 years, 15-16 years and 17-18 years).
